When I heard he was being prepared for discharge, I drove to Thrive to return the few things he had with him the day of the accident— a pink polo, a Winnie the Pooh harness, and a black reflective leash. I wanted his family to have them. I imagined his late mom choosing them with care, never knowing how important they would one day become.

While I was there, I asked to see him. I kept it brief. Put plainly, I am a stranger to him. But Toby was brighter than the last time I saw him— more alert, more present. Still a little shut down, though it felt less neurological and more like the quiet grief animals carry in their own way.

I sat with him for a few minutes. I pet his head. I told him how sorry I was that this happened. I told him that people from all over the world were rooting for him now. Then I wished him well, and we both went on our way.

Not long after, Toby was discharged— reunited with his sister and welcomed home by his late mom’s family in Flagstaff. They report that he’s doing well.

And as for me… I never quite know where this wild world of rescue will take me next. But I do know that moments like this remind me why we show up at all— with intention, but imperfect, and with our hearts wide open. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a steward of your generosity for these animals. THANK YOU will never be enough ✨🥹

Sky Sanctuary family, it’s been a long and heavy few days, but I wanted to share a quick update on Toby. I connected with his late mother’s son. He shared that Toby already had a neurological diagnosis that his mother had been managing and that he knew Toby had lived a lot longer than his initial prognosis. But, we didn’t have any idea what that condition was, how it was being managed, what was old and what was new from the accident.

So, we proceeded with the original plan. Toby went under for his MRI and the results were unexpected and really telling. Evidence of an old stroke, changes in the brain indicative of an autoimmune condition shocked us, and new hemorrhaging with blood aging consistent with the time of the fatal crash.

I spent the next day tracking down and combing through Toby’s old medical records, and in doing that, it felt like I got to know his late mom, Margot, and some capacity. She took amazing care of him. This was not Toby’s first CT scan, MRI, or spinal fluid analysis. Toby was diagnosed with a pretty significant neurological disorder in 2019– GME/MUE. Average life expectancy for this diagnosis is 2 to 3 years… and that was 7 years ago.

His mom was managing his condition so incredibly that it was actually brought into remission. She was an avid believer in holistic care and homeopathic, which I can appreciate. Above all, she loved her animals fiercely and would’ve given her life for them. I wish I could’ve gotten to know her under a very different circumstances.

Toby was able to spend some time with his human relatives in Canine sister Josie yesterday afternoon. Family was able to talk to Dr. Adams and discussed with Toby’s life. Might look like moving forward. We are committed to supporting Toby and his family during this time and in the future.

We are still accepting donations for Toby’s ICU care as bills have reached over $11,000, but we are optimistic that soon he will be able to go home. We are so grateful for the support this community has showed him during this uncertain time. You are TRULY the reason his is alive right now. Thank you will never be enough 🥹🙏🏻

Update on the little dog whose mom was killed last night when they were hit by a car while walking in Sun City West. We have him and he is safe but he is in critical condition. Because his doctors are suspicious of not only a brain but a spinal injury we initiated an emergency transfer to THRIVE North Scottsdale where he is receiving care from the best doctors out there. We are moving forward with a trauma CT to find out exactly what we are dealing with— the next 72 hours alone are estimate estimated to cost $7200 and we need your help to provide this little dog with that opportunity to heal. We’ve been holding onto this news for some time now— out of respect for Pretzel’s family, or maybe as a quiet way to delay the grief that his passing stirred back up.

Pretzel passed a few days before Christmas. His family tucked him into bed, just like any other night, and he simply never woke up.

We don’t entirely know why. It may have been a recurrence of a gastric bleed or a neurological event. The truth is, we’ll never know.

What we do know is this: Pretzel was doing so good. He was happy. He was boisterous, opinionated, and full of life. He had regained the ability to stand on his own and had a family who loved him deeply.

We had big plans for Pretzel— more time, more progress, more joy. And while those plans were cut short, the love he knew never was.

Pretzel was perfectly imperfect— all the best ones are.

Say hi to Bunny for me, big guy. I know you two are together + ripping around the heavens right now 🪽

Yesterday afternoon, we had the honor of taking Frankie to be groomed and the relief it brought him was immediate and undeniable. You could feel the weight lift off his little body. We are beyond grateful to @chews4paws , who got him in the very second I called after seeing the severity of his condition. That kindness changed everything for him.

I do need to share that things have become… complicated. Individuals have now come forward claiming Frankie as theirs.

As we carefully navigate this sensitive and complex situation, please know we are doing everything in our power to prioritize Frankie’s health and safety while also staying within all legal parameters. Our hope is that there will be a clear and compassionate resolution soon.

Until then, I likely won’t be able to share further updates on social media due to the nature of this case—but please trust that we are working diligently to protect and advocate for him every step of the way.

From what I can tell, he appears to be completely blind, and I’m deeply concerned there may be something more systemic going on— possibly diabetes or another underlying condition driving these changes.

Fourteen years ago, we brought home our first “baby” on four legs… and somehow life blessed us with the chance to let her meet our newest one. When I first found out I was expecting, I cried tears of anticipatory grief because I really didn’t think Darla’s health would allow her to be here for this moment. Watching our wise old girl lean in to sniff her tiny brother for the first time felt like two chapters of our story finally touching. And we’re even luckier that she welcomed him with the gentlest little wag, like she already knew he belonged here.

I have spent the last two weeks adjusting to my new role… I think the care we provide for our medical animals has really prepared me to be a human mom. Because, before August James 👣 there was Pretzel, Bunny, Charlotte, Lennon, Violet, Stevie, Wilma, Blondie 🐾... the list goes on. And I have to tell you, so many warned me, “the way you see your dogs will change when you have your baby.” That sentiment terrified me. And I found out, those people and I simply aren’t cut from the same cloth. I am more grateful for my animals every single day.

To this community, thank you for showing me some grace during this transitional time in my life. My heart has truly grown over these past few weeks. I can feel like flame inside me burning + I’m so ready to get back into the swing of our new normal. So, let’s save some street dogs… shall we? ✨🥹

I am thrilled to share that Pretzel’s spinal surgery went well— it was much more involved then anticipated, he was in surgery for over 5 hours surrounded by the most knowledgeable minds, but the L6 + L7 vertebrae have been stabilized and the nerves + tethered cord connection have been released 🙌🏼

Pretzel perked up immediately following anesthesia. He made sure to express his distain for the cone to his nurses by strongly objecting and trying to tear out his catheter. That’s our strong spirited boy!

The next morning Dr. Adam’s and team propped him upright and he was able to stand using his back legs with some support! This news is HUGE + a great sign that improvement might be just around the corner. We strongly believe that this surgery that Pretzel is now recovering from will give him the best opportunity to walk again.

An abundance goes out to each and every person who expressed their concern, support + even chipped in to help our sweet boy. This is Pretzel, and today might just be the most important day of his life.

Pretzel came to Sky Sanctuary just days after Bunny passed away. My hope was to honor her life by saving his — but I haven’t shared his story until now. Honestly, I’ve been scared. There were so many unknowns with his condition, and I didn’t know if we’d even be able to give him a real chance.

But today, there’s finally hope.

Pretzel’s MRI showed that he has spina bifida, a defect in his vertebra, and a tethered spinal cord, which means part of his nervous system is actually attached to the underside of his skin. That connection has been pulling his nerves into the defect in his spine, putting his mobility and even his life at serious risk.

The good news? There’s a surgical option. Dr. Adams and the neurology team are taking him into surgery right now to release that connection. If all goes well, it could free him from pain as he grows — and maybe even restore his ability to walk and control his bowels. It’s his best, and only, shot at a normal life.

As many of you saw, Bunny was finally on what felt like the right track. Her pneumonia had cleared, she was full of fire, and for the first time in a long time, WE started to breathe easier. 
But Thursday night everything changed in an instant. She was chasing the big dogs around the yard, dove for a bone Gypsy had, and tumbled into the pool. I’ve watched the surveillance video a hundred times. I was three feet away. She was only six inches under water, for less than four seconds. And in that tiny window of time, the trauma to her fragile lungs was devastating. 
Since then, Bunny has been oxygen-dependent and hospitalized. I visited her a few hours ago at Thrive and I’m happy to share, today she is brighter. They let me feed her, kibble by kibble, like I do at home. She looked right at me as if to say, “Okay, are we going home now?” Not yet, sweet girl. Not yet. 
Her doctors and I are cautiously optimistic, but she needs more time. In our perfect world, Bunny will stay at least another 24 hours so we can slowly taper her off high-flow oxygen and see if she can sustain on her own.

Early yesterday morning, Bunny was admitted to the ER after a terrifying accident—she fell in the pool and inhaled water. She was under for only 4 seconds, and I was standing right there (video in stories). Although her x-rays haven’t shown pneumonia, she’s remained oxygen dependent. Her doctors believe her lungs were injured and that she’s suffering from non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema.

This morning, Dr. Barton called to tell me Bunny needs more than their hospital can provide—she requires high-flow oxygen. THRIVE North Scottsdale had space and agreed to take her as a 911 transfer. We set up her oxygen chamber in Shawn’s truck and rushed her across town. We made it safely, and while her breathing was still efforted, she hung in there like the fighter she is.

I’m now waiting to speak with the criticalist to found out the plan and put down today’s deposit. Her hospitalization at VEG totaled just over $7,000, and Bunny’s care at THRIVE for the first 24 hours are estimated at another $5,000. I’ll post invoices + the new estimate in stories. If anyone has the capacity to chip in toward Bunny’s acute care, it would mean the world to us. Please know how much I hate to ask. I’m just so, so sorry —Caitlin 😭💔

I’m sure being honest about this incident will open up a lot of ridicule in the comments section but, I don’t care. Transparency is important to me + at the end of the day— I know how diligent I am when it comes to our animals safety. But, well… here it goes.

Yesterday evening was one of the most terrifying moments of our lives. One second, Bunny was tearing around the backyard chasing Gypsy like her wild little self… the next, she launched for a bone, miscalculated, and landed directly in the pool.

She’s always supervised outside because of the pool, and thankfully both Shawn and I were only a couple feet away. She was under water for maybe 5 seconds, but those were the longest, scariest 5 seconds of I think both of our lives.

True to her wild child spirit, she popped right back up, shook it off, and kept on with her antics. But hours later, her breathing became labored. I immediately put her in her oxygen chamber, where she rested comfortably overnight. Every time I brought her out for potty breaks, though, her breathing worsened— and when SHE chose to retreat to her oxygen chamber, I knew she was oxygen dependent.

At 4:30am, I made the call to take her to her second home at @vegerforpets where their incredible team was waiting. Miraculously, they were able to place a catheter (Bunny’s “gummy bear veins” don’t make that easy!) and start IV antibiotics + oxygen therapy to get ahead of aspirational pneumonia. Huge shoutout to all-star tech Sasha for being Bunny’s hero ✨

We’re shaken but so, so grateful she’s stable. Rest assured, I’m already researching a pool net so this never happens again. Please keep our Bunny girl in your thoughts as she continues treatment + we’ll keep you posted on her recovery. —Caitlin ❤️‍🩹

And, we’re back! Thank you all for your patience during our little pause these past couple weeks. When my plate is full, the animals + the organization always come first, which means social media is usually the first thing to take the backseat. We’ve had SO much going on behind the scenes!

That said, updates moving forward are going to be much more casual so they can also be more frequent. I want to keep you in the loop, but I don’t have the bandwidth to spend hours creating elaborate reels every day. So if raw + real is your thing… gear up. 
Today, we’re catching up with Bunny because so many of you asked. Bunny is doing well, all things considered. At 9 months old, she is the life of the party—completely obsessed with her benebones and spends hours tossing them around like it’s the best game in the world. She’s also the most enthusiastic eater you’ll ever meet, still being hand-fed piece by piece to support her esophageal abnormality. 
Medically, she is… a doozy. Bunny is incredibly complex. Her recurrent aspiration pneumonia stems from multiple factors: esophageal abnormalities, her unique conformation, and motility issues. It’s going to be a lifelong battle, but she’s got some of the most brilliant minds behind her case.

If I’m being honest, her lifespan will likely be shortened because of her chronic health issues. But to me, quality of life will always be more important than quantity. Thankfully, Bunny is blissfully unaware of her struggles—and for that, I’m so grateful + we will fight on!  
Because of all this, Bunny is officially a sanctuary dog. Like Squid + Gypsy, she’ll spend the rest of her days in my home with my growing (eek!) family, supported by this incredible community. Bunny doesn’t just need me—she needs you. And the way you continue to show up for her proves that only this community can meet her profound level of need. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU will never be enough ✨🥹

Charlotte was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuropathy, which makes it almost impossible for her to drink on her own. While eating is no problem, hydration has been her greatest struggle. We’ve been giving her daily subcutaneous fluids to keep her safe, but we’re now trialing new methods—like a soft muzzle to help support her jaw and a thickening agent for her water.

The best news? She’s tolerating both changes beautifully, and we’re hopeful this will finally help her hydrate on her own. Please keep this sweet survivor in your thoughts as we continue searching for the best ways to support her. P.S. Doesn’t Charlotte looks sweet in @paddocks.paws arms? ✨🫶🏻

I quickly noticed that something wasn’t right and waiting didn’t feel worth the risk.

This is all been very overwhelming but we are trying our best just to take a day by day. In a split second this dog can go from looking like the most pathetic creature in the entire world to “hey guys I’m bunny and I’m ready to rock”.

I don’t know what the future looks like for Bunny but I am so hopeful that one day we can look back and be like “wow, what a time and look how far we’ve come”… manifesting that.

Today, Mr. Cheeks is headed to Carefree Veterinary Dentistry for a critical sedated exam, CT scan, and further diagnostics to assess the damage caused by osteomyelitis and years of neglect.

And here’s the most incredible part… Dr. Jucan and @animaldentalaz have offered to help him completely PRO BONO. This has literally never happened before, and we are overwhelmed with gratitude for their kindness.

Violet is still fighting but we have a long long journey ahead of us. As they shaved the years of neglect from her body, doctors were finally about to better treat + evaluate her. As she received her blood transfusion, we witnessed the life come back into her body. And with all those matts gone, she is able to see again. They just placed a nasal gastric tube to slowly start the refeeding process. This dog has been so severely deprived of nourishment for so long it makes me sick. She can barely lift her head she is so weak. If you are so inclined to make a donation to her critical care, we would be so grateful. Link to donate in bio. I would really like to keep her hospitalized as long as possible to recieve the care she needs for her best possible chance at survival. It’s safe to say our little Kiwi has come back to life… but believe it or not, we found out this week that Kiwi has a old broken femur on her left leg and a grade 3 patellar luxation (bad knee) on her right! We have her scheduled for orthopedic surgery next week— this poor girl has been through it, but her life is only going up from here! If you are interested in adopting Kiwi, please fill out an adoption application link in our bio and we will be likely be reviewing them next week 🥝 ✨
