Lieutenant Dan's Story
Every once in a while, a dog comes along whose spirit changes you, and Lieutenant Dan is one of those dogs.
He crossed the border from Mexico into our care after surviving unimaginable cruelty.
Surviving the Unimaginable
Lieutenant Dan was a victim of what local rescuers have come to know too well—intentional mutilation at the hands of someone they call “The Machete Man.”
It’s as horrific as it sounds, and somehow, this sweet boy made it through. His back feet were gone, his wounds were deep, but his heart? Untouched.
Building a New Future
From the moment he arrived, we saw something rare in him: resilience, joy, and a spark that refused to be dimmed. Despite everything, Lieutenant Dan was goofy, affectionate, and curious about the world around him. It didn’t take long for our team to fall completely in love. We partnered with Dr. Gilson and Dr. Mayer to begin his path to healing.

Building a New Future
Despite the trauma to his legs, Lieutenant Dan was otherwise healthy and still using his back limbs as best he could. He was the perfect candidate for prosthetics, and with the help of Bionic Pets, we began the process of building him a new future, literally from the ground up.
Watching him during his casting appointment, standing strong as the molds were made for his new legs, was nothing short of inspiring. He didn’t flinch. He trusted us. He was ready to run again. And he wasn’t alone.
Twice the Heart
Lieutenant Dan found a kindred spirit in Waylon—another two-legged dog in our sanctuary family.
Watching the two of them together, just a couple of happy guys with half the limbs and twice the heart, reminded us why we do this work.
A Life of Freedom
Today, Lieutenant Dan lives life as it was always meant to be: full of mobility, freedom, and love.
He is the definition of resilience—proof that even the worst beginnings can lead to the most incredible transformations.
Lieutenant Dan, you are remarkable. The world failed you once, but you’re rewriting your story with every joyful step.
